Personal Response: Having a mentally handicapped character (Anthony)

I think it was a good idea to have a mentally handicapped character because it shows the struggles that he/she goes through in the story and in life. It shows how they overcome their challenges/obstacles everyday. It helps me understand why George looks after Lennie and why they have so many problems. It also explains why Lennie loves to pet mice, but kills them when he squishes their heads. I think the friendship between the men is good, even though it seems like George does not like Lennie. It seems like Lennie makes George's life worse, but actually he makes it better in a way. Even though he always gets George in trouble and makes him move around the country to look for work. I think it’s possible for them to work at this ranch. If they do work and do what they are supposed to do,  they can get to their dream. Lennie will get his dream of looking over rabbits , and they will finally have a house and a stove. George told Lennie they are different then other workers because they have each other and they do not need to spend all their time at a bar or at a poker table spending their money.

  1. Good job in exploring how Lennie's handicap effects their friendship. You make an excellent point that although Lennie causes problems, he also adds a lot to George's life. Next time, try and go back into your text and back these ideas up with quotes. They will really help strengthen the point you are making.

  2. Nice way of putting your thoughts together & making it as if the problems were to become good at the end.
By the way that you talk about Lennie & George's friendship it seems as if they were really good friends, more like family.
You can tell that George really does care for lennie.
