Personal Response: The Dust Bowl & Its Effects (Ana)

The Dust Bowl was a big event that happened in the early 1930s & that lasted about a decade. It was a worldwide economic decline when the land became dry & farmers couldn’t plant their crops. Many people lost their jobs & home because of the dust bowl. Some farmers were forced off of their land & some gave up. People had to migrate in hope of something better. Some people went to the city, but mostly they went west. The dust bowl changed their lives because many people had to leave where they were raised to support their family. Also, in each country they raised taxes on imported goods to help their own industries. The depression caused some countries to change their type of government & their leader.

I can’t imagine being in their place. They went through so much that we haven’t.  I think that this can happen again because of the kind of weather we’re having. There is an extreme change in it. From time to time we have droughts. Some aren’t that big, but they can lead to more. For example, in the summer it gets really hot & it gets hard for the farmers because crops can die of too much heat. The article said, “It was the most difficult and longest period of unemployment and low business activity in modern times.” We have problems like this today. Many people don’t have lost their jobs just like in the great depression. These are my reasons in why I think that the depression can come back.

  1. I love that you are able to realize there are several similarities between the Great Depression and today's world. I would have liked it if you would have explained a little more. I think you were right on track with people losing their jobs and such. We have many people who are losing their jobs and homes because of the economic situation. How bad do you think it will get?

Eric, what did you think was specifically great about this piece? I bet Ana would have loved more specific details to help her with her writing.

  2. I like all the details you put in it. Everything good but you should of added a little more about the people loosing their jobs, and why they went west for.
