During the depression, no one could find any work and if they did it would be really hard because of the heat. They needed helpers in the West, but too many people came. The cops came and took away the ones that didn’t have any money. Some of the migrants starved because they didn’t have any money to buy food. Others were left homeless and no one cared. They just called them Okies to insult them. It changed their lives because some of them left their homes to go work, but got kicked out of California. This could happen again if there’s no electricity and people need to work on ranches. There are barely any ranches. There will be a lot of people going to the only ranches there are. The Okies were people that came from Oklahoma to California to work, but the people from California insulted them calling them Okies. Californian's said that they were a problem, but the Okies only wanted a job so they can survive. They migrated to California because they needed jobs to survive. The bill ganzel said that, “So many migrated from Oklahoma that they were dubbed "Okies" in the popular press”. It connects with the book because George and Lennie also have to migrate to different counties to look for a farm to work in and if they don’t find a job they will starve and will be homeless because they won't have any money.
