The Dust Bowl

The dust bowl was one of the hardest times in the 1930’s, it took part around the Midwestern area this affected people in many different ways, most people had to walk backwards and most of the time dust would get in house’s so people would wear mask.  Okies were people from Oklahoma who migrated towards California so they could get  away from the dustbowl.  This caused a lot of formers to leave their farms, and move to the city to avoid the dust bowl, but little did they know the cities were still under depression at the time, and California was one of the best places to find jobs. This connects to the book of mice and men because George and Lennie had to move to Soledad California, first of all because Lennie had gotten them both kicked out of the first place they were in which was a place called weed because he grabbed a woman by her clothes and would not let go so she accused him of rape, and second of all they needed to find some more work so they could at least make a living off of something.  I could not imagine living in this time of the depression or the dust bowl, my family trying to figure out what to eat everyday, or worrying about dust getting in my home or all in my eyes or face, this would just not be the life for me. http://www.livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe30s/water_06.html

The Dust Bowl and Its Effects

        How would it feel if you were an Okie during the dust bowl? Being there during a dust bowl would be a scary event. Because you will have to leave everything, your home and friends. An Okie is a group of people who migrate to another place because of a bad situation or to find a job. If I was there during the dust bowl, I would have been very scared. You wouldn’t be able to see anything, because the dust would be covering your eyes and your face. And you will need to take cover somewhere the dust won’t come in. Before the dust storm comes, people would pack up and leave with their families and pets. And they would go to another place to live. “The families packed their belongings and set out on a journey of three days or more down Route 66 to a supposedly better life in the Far West”. I think that the little kids and old people would have the ones that suffer more. I would have taken care of my little siblings. I think the dust bowl affected everyone who lived there during the dust bowl. I think that the dust bowl has to do something with the book of Mice and Men because, I think in the book a really big and bad dust bowl will happen. And the workers will need to leave or stay there during a dust bowl. I thinks that how its connected with the book.

They people alive during the dust bowl had hard lives. “The most visible evidence of how dry the 1930s became was the dust storm.” People would have had to probably move out of their house because of the dust storm.  They would have gone through a lot of changes. People had to adapt to all the dust. Some people got sick because of the things in the dust.

During that time there was people called “Okies” they were people who moved around trying to find a job or move because of bad situations. If I were alive during that time I would have moved away. I would have hated to live in the dust storm area. I think it is possible to happen again. But farmers have learned better technics since then and we know more about it then people did back then.

     These people went through a hard time. The struggled. Daily the were worried about what there going to be   doing the next day. The lived there lives day by day. Un sure of what they are going to do next. The were all very Un sure of there future. The lives change dramatically. They had to move away from their comfort zone, The had to adapt to a new life style. The were forced to leave there homes. Just because of the drought. There were no longer crops so they were forced to move. There lives changed by them having to move. There were forced to move. They had no other option.

            I do believe that it all could happen again. We’re kind in drought now. If it all of a sudden decides not to rain then it will be a drought all over. Farmers will again be forced to move. To be put out of there home’s once more. It could all very easily happen again. If we are in drought now, any little thing could make it worse. Especially since now here in America we have a lot of migrant workers. So we really cant afforded any more.

The Living History Website said, "California – the state that had once advertised for more migrant workers – found themselves overwhelmed by up to 7,000 new migrants a month, more migrants than they needed. So for several months in 1936, the Los Angeles Police Department sent 136 deputies to the state lines to turn back migrants who didn't have any money. Bordering states like Arizona were angry that California was trying to "dump hoboes" back on them. Eventually, the police were returned to Los Angeles, but the migrants kept coming" (The Living History Farm)

DUST BOWL EFFECT

              The Living History Website said that, “California – the state that had once advertised for more migrant workers – found themselves overwhelmed by up to 7,000 new migrants a month, more migrants than they needed” (Living History).

 The Oklahoma historical society it said that, ‘’South westerners had been moving west in significant numbers since 1910. However, not until the 1930s did this migration, particularly to California, become widely noticed and associated with Oklahomans. During the Great Depression decade Oklahoma suffered a net loss through migration (outflow minus inflow) of 440,000. Although Oklahomans left for other states, they made the greatest impact on California and Arizona, where the term "Okie" denoted any poverty-stricken migrant from the Southwest (Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas). From 1935 to 1940 California received more than 250,000 migrants from the Southwest. A plurality of the impoverished ones came from Oklahoma.’’

My thoughts are about this is that most of the people who lived in the dust bowl really did have a hard time living there and I know they had they be very scared of that storm when they see it coming. I know for a fact that some of the people had to ware mask for their own safety reasons. I know I would never have what it takes to live in the dust bowl because I have amah so I think I would be sick for the rest of my life and I know with all the house that looks like the way look I know my family will have a really hard time living their. More than likely their lives changed when the dust bowl started to kill people and make them sick everyday of their life I know some them had to move from where they stayed. I hope this will not happened again because the earth had change over the years and been down to Oklahoma before so for I heard there is no signed of any dust storms lately.
